Gordon Brown gets pummelled by the press after the Labour Party suffered major losses in yesterday’s European Parliament elections. Here are a few of the latest headlines:

BBC: Brown Fights for Future

Telegraph: John Hutton Resigns, Piling Pressure on Gordon Brown

Guardian: Is this Really the End for Gordon Brown?

Independent: Purnell Quits, and Tells PM to Stand Aside

Sky: Gordon Brown Battles to Save His Government

If Brown does step down, the favourite here to succeed him is Alan Johnson, now tapped to become Home Secretary according to latest reports.  Here’s an interesting tidbit on Johnson from Wikipedia that I imagine some will want to keep under wraps if he does become PM…let’s just say he’s no Churchill:

He joined the Labour Party in 1971, although he considered himself a Marxist ideologically aligned with the Communist Party of Great Britain. A full-time union official from 1987, he became general secretary of the newly-formed Communication Workers Union in 1993 following a series of union mergers.
